Simple and Complex Motor Speed

Simple motor speed is tested by requesting the subject to tap as quickly as possible on the space bar of the computer keyboard using the dominant and nondominant forefinger. The computer records the number of taps as well as the time interval between taps.The program uses these interval measurements to calculate overall tapping speed and the consistency and rhythmicity in tapping. The computer assessment is far more accurate than analog tappers.Consistency and Rhythmicity measures are also impossible to derive from the usual tapping devices.

There are two complex tapping measurements also included in the program. The first involves the subject tapping alternately with the left and right forefinger on alternate sides of the keyboard. This is assessment allows you to measure the coordination of the motor system across the two cerebral hemispheres.

The second complex method requests the subject to tap a sequence of keys with each hand. This allows for a much more sensitive motor skill assessment than simple tapping with the forefinger alone.

The computer calculates all the relevant scores, including speed measures, consistency and errors in sequencing.

The program also includes a graphic display of when a tap occurred in the tapping interval. This allows you to "view" the consistency of the motor movements.
