Symptom Validity Scales

A variety of techniques have recently been developed to examine malingering and factitious responding. All involve presenting stimuli to the subject which appear complex but actually incorporate very simple cognitive processes, such as simple memory recognition. If the subject responds worse than chance on such a task, it is taken as evidence of intentional factitious responding. This program allows the user to easily present what appear to be complex stimuli in both recall and recognition memory formats. The program records errors and item response times; quick responses at chance error levels indicates a pure guessing strategy.

The second screen image on the right depicts the forced-choice recognition memory task. Here the subject is shown a single string of letters and numbers. Following a short delay, the subject is shown a pair of strings and asked to indicate which string was presented before.The program computes probabilities of responding worse than chance.
